The comic book, once the bane of teachers trying to hold the attention of students, is now a learning tool, The Oregonian reported.
"Students once sneaked comic books to class, hiding them from teachers who blamed them for juvenile delinquency, poor reading skills and declining education," the newspaper said.
Enter the Comic Book Project at Columbia University in New York. Some students find comic books less intimidating than textbooks, project founder Michael Bitz told the Oregonian. And kids can use the style to express themselves, he said. Now, the paper said, "educators are bringing comics to class, and they're using them to teach kids to get along, appreciate literature and learn more effectively."
