Mega church pastor Creflo Dollar was arrested on Friday after, according to authorities, he hurt his 15-year-old daughter in a fight at home. The Associated Press reports that Creflo Dollar was arrested at his house at 1 a.m. Friday morning. Dollar and his daughter were apparently arguing about a party that the girl wanted to attend. The argument got physical, and according to the police report, Dollar started to choke the girl.
When asked by the police authorities as to why he spanked and strangled his young daughter, the pastor and televangelist replied that it happened because she hit him first.
The police report says that Dollar threw his daughter on the ground during the fight, choked her, repeatedly punched her on different parts of her body and also hit her with his shoe at his home in metro Atlanta. Apparently, during the fight, his daughter somehow got free and managed to call 911.
Dollar said that he hit his daughter and entered a fight with her only because she had become disrespectful. The authorities believe that the bruises and injuries on pastor’s daughter are superficial.
At the moment, Dollar faces charges of simple battery and cruelty to a child. According to his lawyer, Nikki Bonner, they are gathering relevant information about the case and refrained from making more comments.
"As a father I love my children and I always have their best interest at heart at all times, and I would never use my hand to ever cause bodily harm to my children," Dollar said in a statement released by his lawyer, Nikki Bonner. "The facts in this case will be handled privately to further protect my children. My family thanks you for your prayers and continued support."
A judge has set Dollar’s bail at $5000 at a hearing.
Creflo Dollar has been World Changers Church International’s pastor for years. As mentioned on the church’s website, it serves nearly 30,000 members and hosts 6,000 worshippers each week. The website also states that Dollar is married to a co-pastor named Taffy and they have 5 children together. He preaches "prosperity theology" in his Sunday sermons that are also broadcast internationally.
Meanwhile, no statement from Dollar's daughter has been released by the authorities.
