At approximately 5:50 AM Hawaii Time, Rosalind (Roz) Savage made history by becoming the first woman to row across the Pacific Ocean, arriving at the Waikiki Yacht Club in Honolulu, marking the end of the first leg of a three stage journey that started in San Francisco about 100 days ago.
Chronicled by the TWiT.tv netcast "Roz Rows the Pacific," the rowing expedition aims to highlight the environmental issues facing the worlds oceans, with this first leg of the journey working to bring awareness to plastic pollution in the oceans, a mission like that of the Junk, a raft built from plastic water bottles that arrived about four days prior in the Ala Wai harbour.
Savage will depart Hawaii in March of 2009 to the small island nation of Tuvalu, from there moving to Australia.
In 2006, Savage was the sole female solo rower in the Atlantic rowing race, completing the voyage from the United States to Antigua in 103 days, in spite of equipment failures.
