A decision has been taken to go in for culling of 300 white tailed deer over a 3 year period from the Rock Creek Park of Washington DC to maintain equilibrium between the available green cover and the number of animals.
This has been reported in guardian.com dated 5th of June 2012.
The Rock Creek Park is a landmark of Washington DC and more than 2 million visitors arrive here every year – its running and cycling trails, picnic tables, tennis courts and riding stables are attractions that one just cannot ignore.
It seems the population of the white tailed deer in this park has gone out of proportion – against an average of 15 to 20 deer per square mile, the figure is nearly 80.
This is an alarming situation because there is no scope to increase the forest cover and hence the deer population must be reduced.
The culling would begin in January-2013 and would be undertaken by experience snipers.
The meat would be sent to charitable institutions and local shelters for feeding the poor and the homeless.
