A so called “strawberry milkshake lake” is found in Senegal of West Africa. The Lake Retba has a pink colored water due to the high level of salt in the water that some areas containing up to 40 percent of it.
The strawberry colour is produced by salt-loving organism Dunaliella salina. They produce a red pigment that absorbs and uses the energy of sunlight to create more energy, turning the water pink as explained by Michael Danson from the University of Bath in UK.
Like in the Dead sea in Gulf floating is so easy due to high salt content as it aids in floatation. The Lake Retba was featured on Amazing Race 6 in which teams had to collect salt in a basket from the bottom of the lake floor.
