A visibly choked Christian Bale fought back tears on seeing a video montage of the first two Dark Knight movies that featured scenes of the late Heath Ledger, at the MTV Movie Awards last night (June 03, 2012).
Bale and Ledger had become buddies during the shooting of Dark Knight, the first of three Christopher Nolan directed Batman movies starring Bale in the leading role and Ledger as the joker.
Obviously stirred by vivid memories of their friendship, the Golden Globe winner broke down just as Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Gary Oldman and he were introducing the montage depicting his late pal.
The video contained scenes of Ledger in the 2008 film, the second in the Dark Knight, Batman tri series. Once the video featuring his friend was aired, Bale went back to the microphone to help introduce Director Nolan.
However, the 38-year old actor’s eyes still glistened with tears and he could barely speak. Apparently the tough guy was having a difficult time not breaking into tears on stage last night. He tried stepped back from the mike for a moment of silence, trying to get a grip on his motions by looking down and wiping his runny nose.
Somehow, he managed to rapidly get himself together and along-with his two cast mates introduced Nolan, who in turn introduced a clip of the most awaited sequel, The Dark Knight Rises which is set to be released in UK and US on July 20.
It may be noted that Heath Ledger died from an overdose of prescription drugs. A few months later he won an Academy Award posthumously for Best Supporting Actor in his role as the maniacal and clearly troubled Joker.
On hearing of his friend’s death a bereaved Bale had said: 'Heath was infectious; his death makes me angry because I know our friendship would have blossomed had he not died.' The MTV Movie Awards 2012 airs on Monday, June 4 at 9 pm on MTV UK.
