Miss America 2012 has three categories in which the contestants are judged; the bikini round, the evening gown round and the question-answer session. In both the bikini and evening gown categories, Olivia Cuplo wore a purple attire. In the first round, Cuplo strutted on the stage wearing a purple bikini and later a purple evening gown with a sparkly belt. During the question answer round, she was dealt the most difficult question; would it be fair for a person born a man to be named Miss Universe after becoming a woman? To this question, Olivia Cuplo answered that she fully embraced the organizers' decision to let transgender participate and added; ‘I do think that would be fair. But I could understand how people could be apprehensive to take that road.’
Olivia Cuplo also shocked the people by revealing that as a girl she was short and chubby, but that she later blossomed after her growth years. She also said that during the summers, instead of focusing and fretting over her looks, she attended a band camp and devoted much of her time to the cello.
When Olivia Cuplo was announced as the winner of Miss America 2012, Miss America 2011, Alyssa Campanella came on the stage to crown her successor.
