A cargo jet crashed into a minivan at Ghana's Accra airport on Saturday after it failed to stop at the runway on landing, killing at least 10 people, airport officials said. The cargo jet was a Boeing 727-200 operated by Nigerian cargo airline Allied Air, Doreen Owusu Fianko, managing director of Ghana Airport Company, told the press.
The incident occurred when the aircraft collided with a mini Mercedez van killing 10, Fianko said. However, all four crew of the aircraft survived the accident. She said the plane had taken off from Lagos, Nigeria, but overshoot at the end of the runway after it touched down at Accra’s Kotoka airport just after 7:00 p.m. (1900 GMT).
Witnesses saw a badly damaged minivan and ten bodies lay next to the crashed plane, where its wings were partially ripped off including its undercarriage. The airport perimeter wall was destroyed and police and military were at the scene.
