Arab League: Syria serious about ending violence

Syrian president Bashar al-Assad met on Wednesday with Arab League delegates seeking to put an end to months of violence in Syria. The delegation of Arab ministers included envoys from six Arab nations. The head of the Arab League delegation, Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad al-Thani, said the talks were "cordial and frank" and that the ministers would meet Syrian officials again on Oct. 30. He said that that meeting would also be held in the Syrian capital, Damascus. Al-Thani added that the Syrian government had vowed to reach a solution on the wide-ranging issues discussed at the meeting. Qatar led the delegation, which included Egypt, Algeria, Oman, Sudan and Yemen, as well as Arab League Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi. The Syrian government says it is serious about political reform, and that it believes militants are causing problems and making resolving the situation difficult. However, opposition officials say Assad has no intention of stepping down from power and as evidence point to the increase in killings, torture, arrests and assassinations carried out by the government.
