Meet Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka's Twins - Oprah's Next Chapter - Oprah Winfrey Network

“How I met your mother” star Neil Patrick Harris sat down with Oprah this week to tell her the odd science behind the birth of his twins with partner David Burtka. Harris said the twins' birth via a surrogate was nothing less than a miracle.

Harris, who is one of the first Hollywood actors to come out, welcomed Oprah Winfrey at his house he shares with longtime partner David Burtka. In an exclusive sit down that airs Sunday on OWN, Harris tells Winfrey the strange story of how their now 19-month-old twins were conceived and brought into this world.

When asked what they plan to tell their children when they would ask why do they have two fathers instead of one father and one mother, Harris said they would explain everything to the kids when they would reach a certain age and they would understand.

“The way they were brought into this world was unique and weirdly scientific... but it came because we really, really wanted kids. We really had thought it through -- financially, emotionally, relationship-wise. ... We didn't just accidentally get pregnant," Patrick Harris explained. "Two eggs, two embryos, one of mine, one of his and a surrogate who Burtka said was "more like the oven," that’s how the twins were born, Harris said.

Sitting in the garden of their sprawling Los Angeles estate, the couple told Winfrey they were lucky that both embryos took and the fraternal twins, Gideon Scott, a boy and Harper Grace, a girl, were born in October 2010. Burtka says Gideon is the “shy one,” but both kids love splashing some water around and taking summer swimming classes.

The 38-year-old comedian also opened up about his sexuality, telling Oprah that from a very early age, he knew that he was different from his other male friends. Confused with his feelings, he dated girls initially, but always wondered why it’s not working the way it should. "I did feel like it wasn’t clicking like it was supposed to, and kept wondering, was it me?" said Harris.

Back in 2006, when Harris came out, he told People magazine that instead of ignoring what people were gossiping about he’s proud to tell that he’s living a very content life with his partner.
