Nearly 60% of workers say they've dated a colleague at least once, according to a recent US survey.

But while they may be enjoyable and exciting at the time, workplace romances are not without their potential pitfalls - even if you're both otherwise single. Not only do you run the risk of having to face one another every day if it all goes wrong, but you also have to negotiate your colleagues' suspicions and concerns, whether or not you remain an item.

Still tempted to make a move in your office? Follow these four simple rules for when your professional relationship turns personal...

Think before you leap!

Yes, we know it's easier said than done - particularly when you've both had a couple of drinks in the pub on a Friday night. But it does pay to stop and consider the possible consequences of hooking up with someone from work. After all, however things pan out, you're going to have to face one another again on Monday morning.

So ask yourself these questions. Is he definitely single? If he isn't, you're entering a whole different ball game - and someone's bound to get hurt. How closely do you work together? If one of you manages the other one, for example, there could be serious repercussions for your career - particularly if colleagues find out about your dalliance. Even a cheeky snog could come back to haunt you next time you apply for promotion.
