He ended his young life because he was constantly bullied for his short stature. This is the sad story of a bright 12-year-old East Harlem boy who hangs himself after being persistently besieged by bullies simply because he was clever and short for his age.
Relatives told the Post, Joel Morales was even ridiculed because his father had died when he was just 2. A crying Richard Salazar, 25 said that his brother is not here because of bullying. The heartbroken Francisco Babilonia, grandpa of the boy said kids threw sticks and rocks at Morales. He said, his grandson was smart kid, though he was 12-years-old but he had the air of an 18-year-old.
Lizbeth Babilonia, Joel’s mother, was searching for her boy together with some neighbors thinking the boy was late to return from an after school program. At around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday, she returned to the building in the Jefferson Houses, went into the bathroom and there she hollered in pain after finding her son’s death in the bathtub.
The neighbor, Inez Rodriguez thought the boy had drowned but then she saw the lacerations around his neck. She saw Lizbeth tried to cut herself and she knocked the knife out from her hand. Lizbeth kept saying she couldn’t live without her son, Rodriguez said.
Angelica Babilonia, Joel’s aunt said the boy was mocked so much. He was really short for his age of 12 but he looked 8.
Nancy Napoleoni, Richard Salazar’s wife was fuming mad when she spotted some of Morales’ bullies at a vigil held in front of the apartment building.
