A newly released surveillance video showed grisly assault on a homeless man whose face was eaten by a deranged assailant lasted for 18 agonizing minutes .
Footage taken by security cameras at the nearby Miami Herald building show most of the 18 gory minutes of Eugene's growling and vicious attack on Poppo when Eugene ate the man's nose, mouth and eyes.
New York Daily News reported,Ronald Poppo, 65,a homeless drifter whose face was largely eaten by the “Miami Zombie” was once a brainy 1964 graduate of New York’s prestigious Stuyvesant High School.What made the down fall of such a brilliant young man to a life of the street.
Stuyvesant classmate, Felix Freshwater, who became a known plastic surgeon in Miami,said“The sad reality is there are many brilliant people who become schizophrenic and end up on the streets.”
He remains in critical condition, with 80% of his face gone.
Video shows Miami police officer Jose Rivera pulling up and emerging casually from his patrol car.After one good look at the bloody scene, he stiffens and immediately draws his gun.The cop ordered Eugene to stop the attack, but Eugene ignored his command and even growled back at the officer.Rivera reportedly then shot Eugene once, but Eugene still continued to attack Poppo's face, prompting the officer to shoot multiple times until he was dead.
