Auditions continue on “So You Think You Can Dance” as the show moves to Los Angeles. Jesse Tyler Ferguson of “Moder Family” joins executive producer and head judge Nigel Lythgoe and ballroom expert Mary Murphy at the judge’s table.
The auditions open with Alexa Anderson, who tried out last year and just missed the top 20 cutoff. Nigel simply gave Alexa her ticket to Las Vegas.
Johnnie Wacks impressed the judges with his musicality as he “whacked” to the theme from “Shaft”. Nigel felt that Johnnie could even be good at choreography. Johnnie was sent through to the choreography round.
Eliana auditioned a Contemporary routine, but has been trained in ballet and as an aerial pole dance. The judges and the house gave her a standing ovation. Nigel said the dancing was superb and she was one of the best girl dancers this year. Mary called her a top 20 dancer. Jesse said that he was privileged to see Eliana dance. Nigel said that he looked forward to seeing her in Vegas.
And the good news continued as Nigel called one performer stunning, Mary called a tapper dancer’s routine out of this world, and there were many tears…of joy.
Twins Nick and James – the Ninja Twins – gave up baseball and football for dancing. The boys dedicated their Contemporary routine to “Man in the Mirror” to their first dance teacher who passed away recently. The boys earned themselves a standing ovation, and the crowd shouted Vegas; but because the twins are 32 they are too old for the competition. Nigel said the boys made his day.
Nigel said Sam had beautiful quality but wanted to see more heart and passion from her. Mary said that Sam needed to let it go and free it up; adding that the choreographers would love to work with her. Jesse called Sam a brilliant dancer. The judges asked Sam to move on to the choreography round.
Tap dancing surfer Caley auditioned to the Gotya hit “Somebody I Used to Know”. Jesse called Caley awesome. Mary noted Caley’s confidence, saying his style was cool and fresh. Nigel noted that his audition showed that Caley had learned more than just tap. Caley is moving on to the choreography round.
Megan performed a routine that Mary compared to a butterfly on the stage. Jesse said he couldn’t take his eyes off of her. Nigel called her a little firecracker with great lines and feet. Megan is moving on to Las Vegas.
And the girls continued to take control and impress the judges.
Cole made use of his martial arts training with his character driven dance routnes. All through his performance Mary kept saying wow. Nigel said it was beautiful to watch, and had incredible speed. Cole admitted to earning a silver medal at the Juno Olympics and can perform several dance styles including Ballroom. Mary noted that although she had seen many of the moves Cole did, she had never seen them done like Cole. With questions or doublts Cole moves on the Las Vegas.
Mary was going gaga over the guys and having a lot of fun.
Circus performer David brought his giant hoop for his audition. Jesse called it very cool, Mary said it was mesmerizing and fantastic; and said it was the first time she had ever seen anything like that. Nigel agreed with Mary but questioned what else David could do and sent him on to the choreography round.
Stephen performed his own version of ballet to “Dream Lover”. Nigel called it terrible; adding that although he had brilliant technique it was like a 10 year old at a talent show. Mary wanted to see something else. Stephen got a second chance and put on a show that had Mary screaming and Nigel screaming; and a ticket to Vegas.
During the auditions a number of former tryouts returned and some of them even earned tickets to Las Vegas. Among the returnees was Jonathan. Jesse said that no matter what he thought Jonathan would end up in Vegas, even if they didn’t send him. Jonathan had to show he could do more than controtionist moves. A girl from the crowd was chosen to perform some Ballroom with Jonathan. His routine had Nigel buying his head and Jess running up on stage to give him some money. Mary said Jonathan should go to Vegas, but Nigel wanted him to go on to the choreography round and Jesse agreed.
After three years of seeing her brother audition, only a few weeks after a terrible car accident, Jasmine finally auditioned performing a jazz routine to “I’d Rather be Blind” by Etta James. Nigel said she was fantastic pouring her heart and soul into the dance. Mary said Jasmine danced with maturity. Jesse agreed. Jasmine got her ticket to Las Vegas.
After being in the same accident with his sister, Marshea – who had been pronounced DOA and was in a coma for two days – makes his return to the dance floor. Mary stopped the performance and simply held up a ticket to Las Vegas; she said it was incredible what he had done in the six weeks since the accident.
After the choreography round 20 dancers made it through to the Las Vegas round; but Jonathan, David, and Johnnie Whacks were not among them.
Next week it’s on to Atlanta for some hot country dancing.
