The physical condition and the deteriorating health of over half a million pigs and sows in the largest smelly pig farm in Agrosuper slaughterhouse has forced the authorities to shut it down and order slaughter of the animals to prevent spread of any disease.
This has been reported in canada.com dated the 28th of May 2012.
The affected farm is in Freirina which is located some 800 km north of Santiago,
It seems the works of the food processing plant had left due to the smelly atmosphere and the animals were dying due to lack of food and water – the rotting carcasses added to the stench leading to fears of health problems of the local humans.
The setup is owned by Agrosuper who had obtained certification to build the Freirina abattoir in 2006.
They had put in place a system of micro-organisms to eliminate the waste but, it did not come up to expectations - the micro-organisms failed to generate.
