Born in Deep Gap, Georgia, in 1923, and blind since birth due to an eye infection, Musician Arthel Lane "Doc" Watson, died Tuesday at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston, Salem, N.C., after undergoing abdominal surgery last week. He was 89. He gained fame with his blend of country, bluegrass and gospel music.

He was born into a musical family and started playing at an early age, teaching himself guitar on a borrowed instrument.
