Hiv Positive Man Cured

Timothy Brown is at the present time a case considered to be unique. It is the only one sick of AIDS to have healed in 2007 in Berlin with a stem cell transplant.

Introduced as "the patient of Berlin", Timothy Brown, of American nationality, had been declared HIV positive in 1995. Seven years later, we dread swept him a leukaemia. Yet, it is this last Wednesday at the 17th International symposium HIV & emerging infectious diseases (Isheid) which was attended by close to a thousand participants, including more than 600 doctors virologists. In fact, after having received, in 2007 in Berlin, a stem cell transplant, this patient has been cured of the disease and AIDS. After telling his journey of suffering and hope until the healing there are to 5 years, the man received a standing ovation of the room. Quoted by AFP, however, he said "My dream is not to be the first man who tell you I am cured, but to say we are healed". The doctor who has supported MR. "The idea of treating patients with HIV with a cell therapy has emerged in the years 80 ", but it was "not working", recounted the German doctor. With Timothy Brown, the doctor has thus envisaged to seek in the bone marrow donors someone who either carrier of a genetic mutation own to 1% of the white population. This mutation affects the "lock" (the receiver CCR5-d32) which enables the virus to infect CD4 lymphocytes immunizing and porters against HIV. A treatment difficult to put in place for all sick once the donors found, Timothy Brown has thus received consecutively two bone marrow transplants and the results have proved spectacular: not only his leukemia
