Aneillo Arena has been nominated for the best actor award for his performance in the movie ‘Reality’ but he had gunned down three men on the streets of Naples on Christmas Eve 1991.
He is undergoing life sentence for having committed a murder some 20-years ago.
This has been reported in The Telegraph dated 27th of May 2012.
The movie ‘Reality’ is about a fishmonger who becomes obsessed with appearing on Grande Fratello, the Italian equivalent of Big Brother.
However, the 44-year old Neapolitan is a convicted Camorra assassin and is now lodged in a Tuscan jail. The murder was a mafia killing – he was member of a 5-member Camorra commando team who had been ordered to gun down small-time drug dealers of a rival clan who had not paid their dues to the mafia bosses.
It seems, while in jail he took a fascination to acting – and, he was noticed by Matteo Garrone, a director who won the Grand Prix in Cannes in 2008 for his movie ‘Gomorrah’ – that movie portrayed he Camorra mafia of Naples.
One thing led to another and he offered Aneillo a role in his movie ‘Reality’.
To complete the shooting, Aneillo would be allowed to go out every morning in Naples and in Rome – he had to return to his cell each evening.
