Tymoshenko Finally Addresses Nation

Rada, the Ukrainian Parliament witnessed violent free-for-all among its deputies and a couple of the members were injured while debating the language bill as reported in dailymotion.com dated 24th of May 2012.

It seems the argument arose about allowing use of Russian language in certain parts of the country and for granting second language status to Russian in Ukraine.

Some civic institutions are located in places like schools, hospitals and courts in the eastern part of the country and around the city of Donetsk and in the Crimea to the south. In these regions the Russian-speaking population is in the majority, hence the request was to allow use of Russian in these areas as an official language.

One of the warring groups owed allegiance to Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich whereas the other was from the pro-western bloc.

The President wanted to preserve the cultural identity of Ukraine and not dilute it with influence from its neighbor Russia.
