Currently in Zurich, Switzerland, a three-storey building has been relocated to allow the expansion of the railway station. It is the largest displacement of building ever made in Europe! Some 500 people were gathered around to the Oerlikon station to Zurich to attend a show quite rare! An old three-storey building has been placed on the rails to be driven 60 meters further in order to enlarge the station without having to destroy the building. The never seen in Europe! Of course such an operation takes time, of the order of 4 meters per hour, it will not move if easily 6200 tonnes .... To achieve this, it took in a prime time make apparent the foundations, then replace a part of the load-bearing walls by the vertical metal beams, then coat the latter of a concrete wall without touching the ground. A concrete slab has also been cast on the entire distance of travel, while posing over the rails. Finally, the wheels have been added to the length, operated by hydraulic presses in order to enable mobility. Months of preparations have paid off, the operation was a success. Rolf Iten, the technical manager of the operation would recount his doubts before the start of the relocation: "What makes us concern, which is the ground. On the new location we do not know whether it will withstand the weight of the building that we bring. We will monitor it closely, but it is a source of concern".
