The Great Gatsby - Carey Mulligan,Baz Luhrmann,DiCaprio,Tobey Maguire -- Tyrone Rubin Film Show

The first trailer for Baz Luhrmann's highly anticipated adaptation of "The Great Gatsby" has been released online. It features many of the Australian filmmaker's hallmarks, including remarkable visuals. The film is in 3D, has modern music in a 1922 setting and a lead role by superstar Leonardo DiCaprio.

Based on the 1925 best-selling F. Scott Fitzgerald novel, Luhrmann's screen adaptation of "The Great Gatsby" stars Leonardo DiCaprio as the so-called great one, Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway (narrator), Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan and Joel Edgerton as her husband, Tom.

Other actors glimpsed in the trailer include Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan as the mysterious businessman, Meyer Wolfsheim, Australian actor Joel Edgerton as Tom Buchanan (Daisy's husband) and newcomer Elizabeth Debicki as Jordan Baker (Nick's love interest).

Although the movie scenes show New York's Jazz Age 1922, the film, in typical Luhrman’s style, features latest music from Kanye West and Jay-Z, as well as Jack White. The trailer begins with DiCaprio's voice, depicting the "New York, 1922" scene and a Jay-Z and Kanye West song setting the tone for the movie ("No Church in the Wild," from the duo's Watch the Throne album). The trailer shows grand parties, sparkling costumes and fireworks.

The storyline revolves around the secretive, rich and romantic Jay Gatsby, played by DiCaprio. Mulligan is the recipient of his undying love and is played by Daisy Buchanan.

Luhrmann's strong visual effects seem compatible with the enticing glamor of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel, and fans who have read the book will recognize a few significant landmarks, including Gatsby's well-maintained lawn, a "valley of ashes" and an ophthalmologist's billboard.

According to a report, cast member Isla Fisher said in a recent interview, "On my first day, he had Jay-Z pumped up full and we did the entire scene with, you know, Jay-Z in our ear on full blast while acting and it was just so liberating.”

Isla Fisher also praised the director’s skills and said that working with him was a pleasant experience for every actor. She said, "Luhrmann really understands actors and how self-conscious we feel at times, and how exposed we are and how we never know where anything lands. Just the complexity of being vulnerable every minute when you're acting, and he just makes you feel so safe."

The release date for the movie is said to be December 25.
