Ashwaubenon/Green Bay, WIS -- The annual CellCom Green Bay Marathon was canceled halfway through on Sunday due to the heat and the hospitals being too full.
Organizers were already planning for the heat and had added extra water stops and ice baths at the finish line. But the heat was just too much, people began getting extremely dehydrated and many were passing out. Many people had to go to the hospital and because of the small size of the Green Bay metro area; they did not have enough resources to handle all the patients. Mutual aid was called out and crews from all around Brown and neighboring counties came to assist. Eventually the nearest hospitals which are St. Vincent’s and St. Mary's became too full and were unable to accept patients and people were transported to Aurora Medical Center and Bellin Hospital. Because of the full hospitals the marathon was called off at 9:35am.
Runners were stopped and told to wait at water stations to be picked up by bus. Some people still went the full way to the finish line but official times were not recorded for anybody who crossed the line past 9:35.
The first place winner was Bib#4, David Tuwei of Coon Rapids, MN. His time was 02:27:11 with a pace of 5:37.
Updates to come.
