U.S. President Obama returns from campaign trip to the White House in Washington

As the Presidential election looms closer, President Barack Obama has been attacked by a new set of rumors that claim that the Obamas nearly split their marriage before the President’s 2000 presidential campaign could begin. The White House has denied any such story.

In a recently penned biography about Obama, author Edward Klien claims that Obama and Michelle were going through a rough patch in heir marriage in 2000 so much so that the first lady had even got ready the divorce papers. “During the dark days that followed his defeat, he turned to Michelle for comfort. But she was in no mood for sympathy," Klein reportedly writes.

"He had refused to listen to her warnings about taking on Rush.” The primary had put the Obama in a lot of debt and he was very depressed, Klein claims according to a report. “Michelle actually had divorce papers drawn up,” he writes, citing one of her friends. “Obama was so depressed that some of his friends worried that he was suicidal,” the book added without giving much elaboration on the point.

Klien’s book, Amateur also claims to have interviewed a Northwestern University Professor Steven Rogers who said that Obama himself told him that Michelle was against his run for the Senate. While recalling the time Rogers met Obama during a gold fund raiser, he quoted Obama saying, “My wife will not allow me to run for the Senate until I clear up the debts for my unsuccessful run for Congress”.

The leaks from the newly published book has made headlines over the weekend not merely because of getting a scoop out of Obama’s personal life but also because it claims that former President, Clinton thought that Obama was an amateur.

Spokesperson for the White House and other Obama supporters have vigorously condemned the book, that boosts over 200 interviews from people who know Obama really well. "Ed Klein has a proven history of reckless fabrication in order to sell books. Nobody in their right mind would believe the nonsense in this one,” Eric Schultz said.

As the Presidential elections edge closer, its no surprise that Obama is seen caught up in stories that sometimes attack his marriage and sometimes his U.S citizenship. In an earlier story about the residents of the White House, the author claims that Michelle was very upset about Obama running for a second term for the President
