Her Excellency Mrs. Joyce Banda, the Malawi President has Saturday May 19 2012 scored another point by enganging a 10-member team to manage the country's electoral issues.
The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has been in oblivilion for quite some time and the appointments of the new Commissioners has brought some excitement and trust from the Malawi populace as it has demonstrated Joyce Banda's committment and respect to the rule of law.
The team that the Malawi leader has entrusted at the MEC as Commissioners has four clergymen in it . They are Reverend Dr. Allan Chiphiko, Emeritus Bishop Bernard Malango of the Anglican Church, Livingstonia CCAP Synod Reverend Mezuwa Banda and one time outspoken Public Affairs publicist Reverend Emmanuel Chimkwita.
Other members are opposition Malawi Congress Party Spokesperson and former Parliamentarian (Lilongwe) Nancy Tembo, Mrs. Bertha Simwaka, former United Democratic Front Parliamentarian (Mulanje) Eve Ntafu, Dr. Wellington Nakanga, Gloria Chingota and Stanely Biliati.
According to the Chief Secretary of the Malawi Governement, the Commissioners appointments is with immediate effect.
Malawians are eager to see the two vacant consituencies in the country's Northern Region be filled the soonest and that the MEC makes its commmittment to run Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Government Elections together in the year 2014, as required by the law.
It is however not yet clear whether the Malawi leader will maintain Supreme Court of Appleals Judge, Mrs. Anastarzia Msosa as the MEC Chairperson.
Mrs. Msosa has been at the helm of the Malawi Electoral body for two different occassions and is highly rated in the electoral management.
The Malawi Constitution points out that Chairperson of the Electoral Commission be a Judge nominated by the country's Judicial Service Commission, and that there shall be a minimum of Six members in the Electoral Commission.
Holding of the office is for a period of four year unless removed by the President on recommendations from the Public Appointments Committe on grounds opf incapacity or incompetence in the performance of duties of that office.
On expiry of the four-year term, there is room for to serve again if re-appointed.
A Political commentator in Blantyre observed that the appointed Commissioners are of high integrity and hopes that they will at no time succumb to any form of manupulation from any quarters or persons.
