"And it came to pass that we did camp round about the city for many nights; but we did sleep upon our swords, and keep guards, that the Lamanites (people of color) could not come upon us by night and slay us, which they attempted many times; but as many times as they attempted this their blood was spilt."
-- Alma 57:9 (Book of Mormon)
In this fictional race war between the Mormons and the people of color, this verse states that the Mormons stood guard in order to prevent attacks from the people of color.
Doesn't this sound so familiar? "Obama's coming to take our guns." "We need to stay armed because we never know when some Black men will want to rob us." "Man the militias." "The Tea Party are the real Americans!" "We're the true patriots!" This fear-mongering is absolutely false.
