One person was killed and seven others injured Thursday, May 17, in new clashes between Sunnis and Alawites in Tripoli, the largest city in northern Lebanon , said an official of the services of security.
"Intermittent clashes with rockets and machine guns have been held since 4 am" between the district of Bab Al-Tebbaneh [predominantly Sunni and hostile to the Syrian regime] and the neighboring district of Jabal Mohsen [Alawite-dominated pro-regime ], the source said, adding that the houses were burned.
The arm ed Lebanon, deployed since Monday in these sensitive areas , pulled toward the origin of fire, but had to fall back slightly on the streets of Syria , which separates the two neighborhoods. Clashes there were nine deaths and dozens wounded between Saturday and Monday, before the army stepped in and restore calm.
Since the beginning of the revolt against the Syrian regime in March 2011, sectarian clashes erupted several times in Tripoli, but those of the weekend are the deadliest.
