Dallas Cowboy's Goal line Stand, Super Bowl XXVII

Skooter reporting 05/17/12

Do you always play to win? For me it is always my goal to win but you can’t win every time or contest you pursue.

In 1993 and 1994 the back-to-back victories by the Dallas Cowboys at the Super Bowl may disguise the fact that Jimmy Johnson, the team’s legendary former coach, knew as much about losing as he did about winning. In 1989 Johnson’s team had only one win and fifteen losses in his first season in Dallas! This awesome losing season was only a little worse and a little less mortifying than his first year as a high-school defensive coach, when his team finished the season 0-10.

Johnson said about that first season in Dallas, “We had the worst team in the NFL, but I wouldn’t accept anything but being in the Super Bowl.”

Johnson kept a positive attitude. If a running back had the ball, he yelled, “Protect the ball,” rather than “Don’t fumble.” To his field-goal kickers he’d say, “Make this,” not “Don’t miss.” After a loss, he’d spend his post-game time scheming the next win, rather than second-guessing what had gone wrong.

The Cowboys responded, and improved. It took four seasons, but Super Bowl rings were on their fingers.

You may not win every contest you engage in but the person who plays to win always has a much better chance.

But thanks be to God, Who gives us the victory {making us conquerors} through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:57 AMP
