No one is really sure exactly how a greyhound ended up running lose on Interstate 75, near Gainesville, Fla., but when he was finally caught by a Good Samaritan, the two year old brindle-fawn dog began a fight for his life.

On May 9, Gold Coast Greyhound Adoptions rescue volunteer Kendra Stauffer posted an account of what happened to "Freeway" on the Goldcoast Greyhound Rescue Facebook page.

"We got a call from Judy Shamp of the Orlando branch about a greyhound running down I-75. Some folks stopped traffic to get the dog and held him until I could get there. He was in shock, had a fever, and was severely dehydrated. He is a 2-year-old fawn male. He still had his racing muzzle on and his kennel collar. I have no idea if he was being hauled and escaped or is loose from a local kennel and frankly, don't care. He has over 20 wounds on his body, some severe, and some pretty serious road rash."

Freeway was rushed to the University of Florida Vet School emergency clinic where he faced an uncertain future. He had cuts and brusies all over his body, his feet were swolen and had open wounds on them, and infections had already spread through his bloodstream.

Freeway would need multiple surgeries to repair the severe injuries he suffered while running lose for days, without food or water in the Florida heat. And even with that, there was no guarantee he would survive.

Several days after his first surgery, Freeway was released from the animal hospital and began his recovery at Kendra's home.

At first, Freeway was unable to stand and eat on his own due to the severity of his injuries, so he was fed liquefied chicken through a syringe for the first few days. But he slowly began to respond and is now eating and drinking on his own.

It's difficult to say what makes some dogs unwilling to give up after being so badly injured, but there is no doubt Freeway wanted to live.

Although Freeway is on the mend, he and Gold Coast Greyhound Adoptions still face challenges ahead. Surgery, bandages, and medications are costly and Freeway's veterinary bills have grown to more than $3,400.

Gold Coast Greyhound Adoptions has received donations to care for Freeway from both Canadians and Americans in 30 states. But they still need help for this amazing dog, who has fought so hard for his life.
