Those opposed to homosexuality, including gay marriage, use the Bible as their inspiration or moral guide. The Religious Right and some on the Left believe the Bible to be literally God's words to live by.
Most of these same folks say traditional marriage is between one man and one woman, sanctioned by God--who is of course conveying these instructions through the Holy Bible.
Interestingly, the biblical teachings Christians say they follow is eerily similiar to some of the laws some Muslim cultures live by. A recent story out of Afghanistan aired on CNN, showed a 14-year-old girl in prison. She was locked up like a criminal because she took too long to report her rape. This child then had a baby in prison and the only way she could get out is if she married her rapist.
Unbelievable, right? Would you be stunned even more if I tell you this is in the Bible? That a woman raped must marry her rapist?
What about stoned to death for adultery or losing your virginity? Muslim cultures like Iran still practice this and again, this is in the Holy Book, the Bible.
This might come as a shock to some, especially to those who claim Christianity is the one true religion and all others are imposters. Moreover, what the Bible teaches about marriage is far removed from what modern day religious folks tout as "traditional nuptials."
How do Christians reconcile these horrific inconsistencies? By saying the Old Testament is no more and the New Testament is the new rule book to live by. But there are horrors in the NT as well, and the moral code of the Ten Commandments is in the OT.
As I wrote in several of my other articles, I was an avid churchgoer as a child and into my teen years so I know plenty of scripture. But when I came across the following list of Bible verses on a friend's Facebook page, even I was shocked by some of them. The traditional marriage held up as the defense against equal marriage rights for all, is full of holes, for no hetereosexual couple lives by the "true biblical tradition." Read below to see what I mean.
Here is what traditional marriage looks like, the Biblical way. Mind you, there are several variations:
1. Genesis 2:24
Nuclear family: wives are subordinate to their husbands.
Interfaith marrigaes forbidden.
Brides who could not prove their virginity were stoned to death.
Marriages generally arranged and not based on romantic love.
2. Practiced poloygamy: man+wives+concubines.
Several men of God had several wives and concubines. Solomon had 300.
3. Genesis 16
A man could acquire his wife's property, including her slaves.
4. Genesis 38:6-10
Widow must marry her brother-in-law
5. Deuteronomy 22:28-29 victim+her rapist
A virgin who is raped must marry her rapist. (Afghanistan anyone?) The rapist must pay victim's father 50 shokels of silver to make up for his loss.
6. Numbers 31:1-18, Deuteronomy 21:11-14 male soldiers+prisoners of war
Under Moses command, Israelites kill every Medianite man, woman and child, save for the virgin girls who are take as spoils of war. Wives must submit to their new owners.
7. Exodus 21:4 Male slave+female slave+slave master
Slave master could assign his male slave to his female slave. Female slaves must submit to their new husbands.
Told you it was mind-blowing and this is just a snippet of what the Bible says about marriage. Traditional enough for ya?
