Prime minister of the Hamas government Ismail Haniyeh reiterated on Thursday that Hamas will not be dragged into war against Israel if Israel attacks Iran's nuclear facilities, the prime minister of the Hamas government told Reuters in an interview in Gaza.
"Hamas is a Palestinian and Islamic resistance movement that acts within the Palestinian land only and it carries out its political and field actions in a way that suits the interests of the Palestinian people," Haniyeh said.
“Iran did not ask anything from us and we think Iran is not in need of us,” said Haniyeh, adding that an Israeli attack in Iran would lead to serious consequences in the Middle East. “I cannot predict what will happen, but such a battle would have implications on the region.”
Media outlets have reported that Israeli officials say that in the event of war with Iran it would have to reckon with potential attacks from the south by Hamas or Islamic Jihad and from the north byin Lebanon. Israel says these groups possess stockpiles of rockets supplied by Iran.
However, Ismail Haniyeh has rejected the the idea that the formation of a new Israeli government will be the catalyst for an attack on Iran, saying global pressure would stop Israel.
Israeli Prime Ministerunveiled a revamped coalition government on Tuesday, forming a broad alliance with the chief opposition party in a move that commentators speculated would give him more power to launch attacks on Iran and Gaza.
Meanwhile, Salah Al Bardawil, a member of Hamas's political bureau, said in an interview with The Guardian that Iran is Shiite while the Palestinians in Gaza are Sunni.
Hamas wouldn't take sides or take part in such a war, should it happen, since Hamas isn't part of any military or political axis, and its operations are restricted to the Palestinian land only, Al Bardawil said.
In March, Hamas leaderdisavowed the comments in an interview with the Iranian Fars news agency and said Hamas would respond to Israel and its allies in the event of an attack on Iran.
"Retaliation with utmost power is the position of Hamas with regard to a Zionist war on Iran," he said.
