For many years, working overseas was the most favorite job among the Filipinos. Good salary is the primary reason to many, while others are the opportunity to be a permanent residence in a particular country. Twenty years ago, working overseas was still easy and affordable now, it is costly.
Are all who worked overseas end a better life after? Not all who worked overseas became successful. There were some who were unfortunate and became poorer than before. Some sold their land, borrowed money from relatives, and loaned their properties in order to pay the agency but they could hardly pay them back because they were immediately terminated as soon as they arrived. Others were tempted to do impulsive buying, trying to buy everything they desired- expensive clothes, branded shoes and accessories. Those who were prudent were able to build a house, save for their children’s future and buy land. Others send most of their salary and go home empty handed after two years.
Who will ever think that work abroad is not that easy when our fellow countrymen go home with all their expensive gadgets and look better when they first left our country? They are physically different and obviously dress better than before.
Life as overseas worker is very complicated. What we used to do here does not apply in other country. As most overseas workers say, “do not bring your degree”. We may be a professional, a licensed teacher or a college degree here in the Philippines but not when we work in the Middle East, U.S.A., or in Canada. They have a different culture, lifestyle, food and language that are very different from us. There were many overseas workers, domestic helpers in particular who were maltreated; not provided sufficient food, lack of sleep, and underpaid. Yet, they were willing to sacrifice just to give their family a brighter future. What consolations do they expect to receive? Their children’s diploma, certificate, and achievement are their only inspiration to move on. Nevertheless, that was not what many got. Problems from husband’s or wife’s unfaithfulness, indulged to vices; children’s straying from school and pre- marital sex were issues that overseas worker has to face. Read more
