Russian superjet goes missing during test flight with 44 on board, reports say

Sukhoi Superjet-100 left Jakarta's Halim Perdanakusuma Airport at 2:21 p.m. It went missing from the radar 21 minutes later while 50 people were on board.

The plane was flying over mountains and it vanished after the pilot requested permission to descend from 10,000 feet to 6,000 feet.

"The first demonstration flight in the morning went smoothly," said Sunaryo, an official with Sukhoi's Indonesian agent, Trimarga Rekatama. "There were no problems."

Developed by the Russian aerospace company Sukhoi in co-operation with Western partners, the plane is the first completely new airliner designed by Russia since the Soviet collapse.
