Early Wednesday morning, May 9, 2012, a huge fire burned down the Tan Building along Montilla Boulevard in Butuan City. At least 18 people were reported to have perished from the fire.
The fire was considered the biggest to ever happen to the city and the most tragic to date. It struck the Novo Jeans and Shirt Store. According to reports, the victims were trapped when the fire broke out around 3:55 AM. Twelve of the charred remains were found on a single area on the third floor which was said to be the sleeping quarters of the store’s employees. The rest were found scattered on the second floor area. At least 2 persons were reported to have survived having been able to jump from the second floor window.
The fire also razed the neighboring establishment including a business center for Smart Communications Inc. and the long running Crown Supermarket.
