The media is full of reports of the ambitious plans of an underwear-bomb attack on a US-bound plane by an al-Qaeda operative of Yemen on the anniversary of the death of Osama bin Laden.
It is now gradually emerging that the suspect was actually an informant of the CIA, a sort of a Double-Agent, as reported in nzherald.co.nz dated 9th of May 2012.
The terror plan involved use of an upgraded version of the underwear-bomb which was used in an attempt to bomb a flight over Detroit on Christmas Eve of 2009.
These underwear-bombs apparently make use of chemicals which do not get revealed by metal detectors of by body scanners – the bombers mix the chemicals to manufacture the explosive devices once inside the aircraft cabin.
In this case, the CIA informant came to know of the plot well in advance and, in fact, the ‘bomb’ was handed over to him by a Saudi Arabian agent.
It was the culmination of a sophisticated and top secret sting operation and the informant is now safely out of Yemen.
