Osama Bin Laden's son killed in US drone strike

The United States officials claimed on Monday that they have recently thwarted an al-Qaeda plot to bomb a commercial airliner. They also claimed to have seized the bomb and said there is no credible information so far regarding an active terrorist plot against the US. The officials claimed the attack was planned by al-Qaeda affiliates in Yemen and it was being carried out around first death anniversary of terror kingpin Osama Bin Laden. Laden was shot dead by the US Navy Seal on May 2 last year in a sting operation in Abbottabad, Pakistan.

After Pakistan, Yemen appears to be another fastest breeding ground of terrorists. A number of media reports suggest that al-Qaeda linked terrorists have established their safe havens and training camps in Yemen. President Barack Obama recently approved a drone policy for the country as his administration believes that potential terrorists can be eliminated through drone strikes. Also, Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has been busy in creating a network of informants in the volatile country; so that drone strikes could be more accurate and precise.

The US officials claimed the latest attack was being planned to be carried out on the same lines as the one in December 2009. A Yemeni youth had tried to blast an airplane with a bomb in his underwear but he was caught before he could complete his mission. The officials said the latest seized bomb was an upgraded version of the earlier seized underwear bomb. However, the identity of the alleged planner of the attack is still not clear and also whether he is arrested or not. The officials are examining the bomb whether it could have passed through the metal detectors.

The latest device is said to be metal free and could only be checked through scanners for body search. The officials have briefed President Barack Obama who ordered them to beef up security further to avert any untoward incident in the country. For the last couple of years, militants linked to al-Qaeda have tried either to enter into the United States to carry out a terrorist activity or target US civil and military installations based in different countries. After 9/11, the US has proved to be the most pro-active country in the world to avert terror acts either by arresting terrorists or eliminating them.

Despite a decade long war against al-Qaeda and Taliban, they still appear to be equipped with modern explosive devices to carry out their targets across the globe. Though al-Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden has been killed but his legacy continues to haunt the whole world. We believe the US intelligence agencies including Federal Bureau of Investigation would continue their coordinated efforts against terrorists and militants to save the citizens from any untoward incident.
