Filipino value of respect for elders lost in Santiago-Tulfo fist fight: A commentary

For the past 24 hours, several stories have been written about the brawl between Raymart Santiago and Ramon Tulfo at Terminal 3 Ninoy Aquino international Airport (NAIA}. It is no longer important and necessary to restate or repeat what have been said.

Analyses, comments and opinions of all sorts were undoubtedly, been said and rendered. However, suffice it to say, it went viral and transcended national boundaries. It is a piece of news circulating throughout the world.

The incident clearly demonstrated that Filipino time honored and tested “value of respect for elders” was set-aside, forgotten or simply absent in the generation of Santiago and his wife. Ill-temperedness, arrogance, impulsiveness, tactlessness, utter irrationality and devoid of reason conquered the young couple. Both of them including their companions threw their young weights on the elder man, Tulfo.

Tulfo is no less a father if not elder brother for Santiago and his wife. Both are far younger than Tulfo but failed to remind their consciousness of the “respect for elders.” What actually happened was, as if, the Santiago couple mauled their own father or elder brother in Tulfo.

At home, respect for elders is heavily inculcated and emphasized. It is a very good value that makes a person a Filipino. Respect for elders is not fighting back at an older person eventhough he is perceived to be wrong. It is simply avoiding in silence someone older. Putting to mind respect for elders is to avoid confrontation against someone who is older.

It was a very big shame that the Santiago couple failed to respect an old man like Tulfo. The brawl must have been avoided if both have such Filipino value. This highly suggests that respect for elders is longer in their homes.

What’s the use of one’s owning all the fames and greatness when he/she does not know how to respect others? In one way or the other, disrespect for elders debases a human being even lower than the beasts.
