Israel will have to reduce nuclear warheads if Obama wins

These days, a new theory regarding nuclear warheads is under discussion in influential circles of Israel. Under the theory, a number of Israelis sitting at the helm of affairs believe that Israel may have to reduce its nuclear warheads if Obama is reelected to presidency in the upcoming presidential election. They believe after reelection, Obama would seek reduction in nuclear arsenals both in the United States and Russia that may ultimately force Israel to follow the suit.

It is pertinent to mention here that Israel is believed to be a non-declared nuclear state on the map of the world. However, the country does not let go any opportunity to raise alarm over suspected nuclear program of its neighbor, Iran. The United States and Israeli officials believe that Iran is covertly pursuing atomic bomb through enrichment of uranium, a charge that Iranian officials deny vehemently. According to unofficial reports, Israel possesses around 80 warheads and is still striving for more, while it is also said that Israel has around 200 atomic bombs.

It is widely believed that President Barack Obama may devote most of his time to reduce nuclear weapons in the world after being reelected in November. In his first term, he has also signed a pact with Russia in order to reduce warheads, while the campaign may encompass some other countries across the globe as well in his next term. Under the agreement between the United States and Russia, both the countries are planning to reduce the number of nuclear weapons in order to restore a semblance of sense in the international community. Both the countries are supposed to destroy 1500 warheads and 750 launchers each.

It is pertinent to mention here that both Russia and the United States were in an arms race during the era of Cold War. Both the countries were trying to gather as much lethal weapons as they could. And it is also alleged that Russia even helped India to build its nuclear weapons in '70s. India first took out a nuclear test in 1974 that ultimately forced its arch rival Pakistan as well to obtain nuclear weapons in order to maintain minimum deterrence against its rival. Since then, both Pakistan and India have also locked in an unabated arms race rendering majority of their populations living under the poverty line.

The international community hails the likely move of President Barack Obama on reduction of nuclear arsenals across the globe. This will ultimately discourage a number of developing countries including Iran vying for nuclear weapons. Also if Israel is forced to reduce its nuclear warheads, it will definitely send a strong message to Iran to drop its desire of obtaining nuclear weapons. We hope the sanity prevails and the international community forces the nuclear powers to reduce their nuclear arsenals up to a significant extent.
