A New Zealand born NY designer is reported to be thrilled to bits to see Duchess Kate, the former Kate Middleton wear her design at an event last week and gushed that it’s a dream come true for her.
Rebecca Taylor, the Wellington-born US-based dress designer is no novice, she has studied fashion design at the Bowerman School of Design and Wellington Polytechnic (now Massey University). She left for New York to jumpstart her career with barely $400 in her pocket. Today, her brand is distributed in 250 cities in 40 countries, with flagship stores in New York and Hong Kong.
Taylor is someone whom celebrities flock to when they want any designer clothes. Some of her famous Hollywood clients include Sarah Jessica Parker, Reese Witherspoon, Dakota Fanning, Cameron Diaz, Carmen Electra and Taylor Swift.
However, of all the celebrities for the NY designer, the British ‘fashion icon’ Kate Middleton wearing her design is something which gives her a totally new level of fulfillment. Taylor told Dominion Post that seeing a member of royalty, particularly Kate Middleton, attired in her design was one of her greatest celebrity moments as a designer.
Dominion Post quotes the NY designer as saying: "Her (Kate) style is always impeccable … I was thrilled because I'm a huge fan of Catherine and Will.'' It may be noted that on Thursday (26th April) Kate Middleton was photographed wearing Taylor's tweed suit to a London Scott-Amundsen Centenary Race to the South Pole reception.
According to Rebecca Taylor, a royal stylist purchased some clothes from her London shop a few months ago. However, at that point the famed NY designer was not aware as to who would be wearing the outfits.
It was only later on seeing Duchess Kate’s photographs splashed all over that Taylor says she realized that it was Kate Middleton who had worn her clothes. In-fact she even received a thank you note from Buckingham Palace.
The Taylor suit was an immediate sell out minutes after it was worn by the Duchess of Cambridge in London. Although the tweed jacket and skirt from the resort 2011/12 collection had been on sale at Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman, but due to the ‘Duchess effect’ it was promptly sold out in barely half-an-hour
In view of this amazing phenomenon, Taylor took a smart step and had creations re-released. Now the garments are available to buyers again on the designer's website - but at the original full price. In addition to the jacket, $450 (available to pre-order), and skirt, $265, the label is also selling a shift dress version of the design, for $425.
Later speaking to Vogue UK, NY based designer again gushed that she was thrilled to know that Duchess Kate had selected one of her creations. She told Vogue UK: 'I am a Catherine Middleton freak - ever since she came on the scene I said: "I want to dress that girl". It's a dream come true...”
Further she goes on to say that Kate Middleton is a perfect model for her label’s clothes. “It fits her so well, it had a grown-up appeal - but it still looks youthful,' she added. Meanwhile, the decision to reissue the creation so soon after the Duchess was seen attired in it is indeed a smart business move on part of Taylor which is sure to reap rich dividends.
