NUTLEY, N.J., 02 May, 2012
Authorities inform that a 5-year-old girl suffered burns after her mother took her to a stand-up tanning booth. In this connection, the child’s mother Patricia Krentcil from New Jersey has been arrested and charged with second-degree child endangerment.
According to Nutley Police Detective Anthony Montanari, police were called to an elementary school on April 24 because one of the kindergarteners was going through pain as a result of “pretty severe sunburn."
However, 44-year-old Patricia Krentcil, denies harming her daughter stating the child was never exposed to the UV rays in the tanning booth. Her daughter might have got slightly sunburned due to playing outside on a warm day, opines Patricia.
According to the NJ Mom, she considers her trips to the tanning salon which she has been doing since the past ten years, more of an errand in which she brings along her daughter. Patricia insists her daughter was never exposed to the booth lights.
Speaking to NBC 4 New York at her Nutley, N.J. home, Patricia Krentcil explaining her side of the story says: "It's like taking your daughter to go food shopping … There's tons of moms that bring their children in."
She continued "I tan, she doesn't tan …..I'm in the booth, she's in the room. That's all there is to it," she added by way of an explanation. According to her, her daughter loves going to school, but now had to go through this.
“I think it's traumatizing for a little girl who did nothing wrong but got a little sunburned," believes Krentcil. It may be noted New Jersey law prohibits children under the age of 14 from using tanning salons, while those from 14 to 17 years old can do so only with signed parental consent.
The NJ Mom has posted a $25,000 bond, after which she was released to authorities in Camden County, where she has a warrant standing against her on a municipal charge. She is expected to appear in court Wednesday, (May 02, 2012) and hopes to convince the judge it was all a misunderstanding.
