Just how many people are out there in the world willing to shell out money for a piece of stale wedding cake? Well, unbelievably there are, as the confectionary slice in question happens to be from Prince William and Kate Middleton’s royal wedding cake.

Barely days after the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s first wedding anniversary, a slice of their eight-tiered fruit cake wrapped in baking paper, is now being put up for auction. The fruit cake decorated in white and gold tin was served at a lunchtime reception for close friends and family of the British royal family.

A slip attached to it reads "With best wishes from TRH (Their Royal Highnesses) The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall in celebration of the wedding of TRH the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge." Attached also is the Westminster Abbey’s 16-page "Order of Service" comprising of the vows, hymns and prayers from the wedding. It

Comprising 17 individual cakes that make up the eight tiers, Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding cake is decorated with nearly 900 individual iced flowers and a garland design akin to the architecture of Buckingham Palace's Picture Gallery.

The first slice from Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding cake is likely to be put up for auction, with the final price expected to touch an astounding $1,620 (1,000 pounds). Slices from the exquisite Fiona Cairns designed cake had been given as gifts to each of the 650 people who attended the lunch last April.

Also going under the hammer is a piece of Prince Charles and Diana’s wedding cake. However, this is not the only cake slice to be sold. In 2008, one royal fan paid $1,830 for this small piece of history. Along-with the above there is a slice of cake from Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips’ nuptials. Attached with it are silver printed wedding breakfast cards, the official invitation, two tickets and the "Order of Service."

Speaking about the unusual auction pieces, Adrian Roose, Director of PFC Auctions informed: "They're two lovely pieces of royal memorabilia, and rarely seen on the market as they are only gifted to close friends and family who attend the weddings ….The royal section of our auction is particularly strong and interest in the royal family is sky high."

For all those interested in the same, the online auction for the cake slices begins on Thursday with a starting bid priced at $162. The auction ends on May 24, 2012.
