Holland Bans Selling of Marijuana to Tourists

The Dutch government has passed a bill that will limit the amount of people legally able to buy marijuana. This bill was set in place in order to keep a hold on the incoming German and Belgian tourists who constantly frequent the coffee shops right across the border.

This comes as a huge surprise for those like myself who hold the Netherlands in high esteem for allowing weed to be tolerated at any level. Most countries have completely made this soft drug illegal. In the United States, for example, millions of people are imprisoned for minor drug charges. Many of these drug charges derive from the possession of weed. Not only does it cost huge amounts of tax payer money to sustain these criminals with minor crimes, but it creates a society of labeling someone as a drug user.

The Netherlands has been a world experiment that has worked for so many years. Letting the countries of the world know that tolerating weed consumption and sales reduces crime. However, there has been a resurgence of a conservative movement in the Dutch Parliament, where many policies that have defined the Netherlands as liberal, such as this bill of restricting many tourists from buying the weed, are being revoked.

Don’t be scared all those who have been planning an insane trip to Amsterdam to get high and pay for sex. Of course all of this can be done legally if you know the right avenues to go. Prostitution of course will still be legal as long as it takes place in zoned sections of the city reserved strictly for prostitution. Just look for the red lights and you will know that the lady standing in the window will do almost everything for the right price. Just some quick tips, though. Make sure not to go into the blue lights; they might look like ladies, but they are men! Also going during the daylight hours will introduce you to the discount hookers, whom have the cheaper rates for the window. Just as they sound, they will not all be beautiful women. Be aware that you get what you pay for, literally.

As for the loophole in the coffee shops in the Netherlands, it will have a hugely negative effect on tourism. It brings many people to this city just to have a crazy and wild night. A legal Las Vegas of Europe minus the huge gambling. The law states that it is illegal for tourists to buy the weed, but it does not say anything about a Dutch citizen buying and giving you it as a “gift." So a new strategy is to have a Dutch person buy your weed for you. A nice lady working at you hostel or a friend you might make in the city. It is legal to smoke it, but not to buy. Make sure you know this distinction. Dutch people are really friendly, especially after a beer or two. Don’t be afraid to ask because more than likely they will be more than willingly to help you get your proper Amsterdam night!
