A woman sends text messages
Written by Ikpafak Thompson Essien Today---April 30, 2012---is the birthday of Engineer Frank Okon. I don't know how old Frank Okon is and it doesn't really matter to me. Other than occasional telephone conversations, I don't know Frank Okon; I have never met him. Until I meet Frank, all I can wish him for now is to say brother, have a Happy and a wonderful Birthday. I don't know if it is fate or a mere irony that in three days from today---May 3, 2012, to be precise---Frank Okon will be standing in an Abuja court as a plaintiff to argue against injustice and usurpation of the people's mandate by GodswillAkpabio. Whether Frank Okon will eventually win the case should not be the issue which anyone ought to worry about. What many should jubilate is that Akpabio's impunity did not go unchallenged. If it wasn't for the courage of Frank Okonand Senator Akpan Udoedehe, who risk their lives and money to challenge the corrupt system perpetuated by GodswillAkpabio, only God knows the extent with which Godswill Akpabio---the James Ibori of Akwa Ibom State--- would have gone to destroy ou r dear Akwa Ibom State. While fighting for the people, it is important to take this opportunity to acknowledge a little of the risks that Frank has and is still enduring. He has received several death threats from Godswill Akpabio, who has the audacity to tell people that he will make sure Frank does not live to see the end of the case against him. All sorts of lies have been leveled and peddled against him---lies started and piped through the rumor mill by Akpabio himself. For instance, a few months ago, Akpabiosent text messages to some of his friends that he had paid-off, and that Frank Okon has acknowledged the receipt of the payment, to drop the case against him. In spite of all his evil ways, I have to give Godswill Akpabio some credits for being an expert in spreading lies. Akpabio has several telephone sets. What he does is that he will lie against those he does not like by using one of his telephone sets to send text messages to another of his telephone set and then show it around as a genuine message sent by the personAkpabio wants to smear. As an example, a few months ago, Akpabio sent the following text message to himself, as if it was a message from FrankOkon; "Your Excellency, I have received the money, I will instruct my lawyers to let Judge Karfarati know that I am no longer interested in the case. The deal is sealed. I will meet you soon. Please be careful that the deal does not leak to the media. Frank" Then Akpabio contacted a few friends and told them that he has struck a deal with Frank and he showed them the text message purportedly sent by Frank Okon. According to sources, those friends with whom Akpabio showed the text message would then begin to spread the lies as truths. And it is working. On March 5, 2012, the following text message was sent to me by someone in Nigeria whom I don't even know; "Ikpafak, It is confirmed that Frank Okon has received $2 million from Akpabio to drop the case." As soon as I received the test message, I contacted Frank Okon by telephone, who denied the allegations. While the legal challenge against Godswill Akpabio is still on, I am calling on every peace-loving Akwa Ibom people to pray for Frank Okon to stand tall and also pray that he should never succumb to the forces of evil, no matter the pressure; money is not everything. Please join me in letting Frank know that the people are one hundred percent behind him. Brother Frank Okon: HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you. Written by Ikpafak Thompson Essien writes from Portland Oregon.
