NFL Draft Preview: Dont'a Hightower

The New England Patriots was ranked 31st in the NFL last season, with that said Bill Belichick's make sure the Pats got an instant upgrade on defense in Thursday NFL first round draft. Patriots moved up with Cincinnati trade to get defensive end Chandler Jones from Syracuse. Jones (6"5', 265-lbs) an athletic pass-rusher designed to patch up the departure of free agent Mark Anderson. Jones is a dual treat at defensive end and can slide as stand up linebacker for the Belichick 3-4 defense.

Still on the first round of the draft New England didn't waste time to moved up to select bulky linebacker Dont'a Hightower from Alabama. Andre Carter's free agent status leave a great need for linebacker and Hightower (6"3', 262-lbs) who can anchor at middle linebacker will answer Patriots need. Hightower lead national champion Alabama with a career-high 85 tackles.

In the second round, Belichick pulled a surprise pick on safety position from Illinois Tavon Wilson who was rated as the 24th safety according to ESPN's Scouts. NFL notable mock drafts blogs completely overlooked Wilson since he didn't attend the NFL combine. After that questionable draft, Patriots proceed a trade from Packers to pick defensive end Jake Bequette from Arkansas. Bequette, (6’5", 270 lbs) adds depth in the lineup that can take Patriots defense to the next level, joining Chandler Jones and Dont’a Hightower. After trading two rounds, Patriots resumed in sixth round picking Nate Ebner DB from Ohio State. To address Patriots cornerback needs, Bellichick picks Alfonso Dennard from Nebraska. The 2012 NFL Draft was so deep that Patriots ables to land Dennard in the seventh round.

And last but not the least, Tom Brady has a mentoring to do when Patriots picks wide reciever Jeremy Ebert from Northwestern. His depth will be tested when he joins Wes Welker, Julian Edelman and Anthony Gonzalez.

Overall, the 2012 NFL Draft indeed bolsters New England defense with five defensive players, one special team and one offensive player. Bill Belichick address the pass rush situation and secondary. With Chandler Jones and Dont’a Hightower alone the playoff team Patriots are just getting stronger than ever.
