How time flies!!! It is already one year, today since Prince William and Kate Middleton tied the knot on April 29 last year. How about going backwards and checking out some key events in the royal couple’s life.
To begin with who can forget the sight of thousands of lustily cheering Brits congregated at London and a mind-boggling 2 billion people from around the globe tuning in to watch the Royal nuptials at Westminster Abbey.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are now all set to celebrate their first marriage anniversary eve in the company of friends at a night party and later in private in their Anglesey home. St James' Palace confirmed the couple has commuted to an undisclosed destination in Britain to an event to mark this momentous day in their life.
It may be recollected that the couple had barely returned from their secret Seychelles honeymoon, after the grand nuptials that they were thrown into a spate of official engagements. In fact William and Kate began their married life by jetting off on their first official overseas tour to Canada and California in USA.
Rosie Nixon, Editor of Hello! Magazine remembers "We saw Kate walk the red carpet at the Baftas in LA and schmooze with the likes of Nicole Kidman and Jennifer Lopez." Nixon opines that even then Duchess Kate was totally comfortable in her new role. “It is a world stage she (Kate) has found herself on, not just covers of magazines in the UK," she adds.
In her 12 months as a royal the former Kate Middleton has seen a number of firsts. Her first Christmas at Sandringham, the family estate of the British Royals, where Catherine held her own admirably in the company of seasoned royals.
Later in February, 2012, when Prince William was on Falklands tour duty as a RAF search and rescue pilot, the Duchess of Cambridge carried out her first official engagements alongside the Queen and Duchess Camila.
From the time Kate Middleton has stepped into British royalty, Catherine has been a huge hit with the media, just as she is a sensation among the fashionistas, who have given her the title of a ‘fashion icon.’ The press and photographers just love her, so follow her and want to record her every step for posterity.
This includes her visit to Fortnum and Mason in March of this year. Everywhere the Kate Middleton goes, anything she does, whichever designer's dress she wears, a hawk-eyed royal press pack zooms in on her and captures her every move.
According to Chris Jackson, Getty Images photographer, so immense is the Will and Kate phenomenon that the couple has definitely changed the pace of royal photography. "It was pretty pedestrian a couple of years ago, but it's picked up and there's an appetite all around the world for images of this couple," opines Jackson.
During William's stint at the Falklands, Kate Middleton got the opportunity to conduct her solo royal assignments in which she acquitted herself admirably. It must have made her immensely happy to choose her first patronages based on her interest in children and arts.
Graham Butland, Chief Executive of East Anglia's Children's Hospices (EACH) declared how impressed they all were at the way Kate Middleton was quickly able to have a rapport with the kids and families in the Milton hospice. What was most impressive according to Butland was “the way she was able to understand the emotions that come with having a child with a severe illness."
Also another first was Kate Middleton’s first public speech at EACH's new 'Treehouse' hospice in Ipswich. In front of the world's media and families and children at the hospice Kate said: "I'm only sorry William can't be here today. He would love it here."
Most importantly, getting into a goldfish like royal life is no child’s play. Duchess Kate in her first year as a Royal family member as also a wife to a royal has never once made a false move. This testimony comes from the royal family members themselves. According to the Queen’s cousin Lady Elizabeth Aston, Catherine’s first year has been faultless, in-fact ‘brilliant’.
Lady Aston told the Radio Times magazine: 'At the moment it is absolutely brilliant. She shouldn't change a thing because she is refreshing, she's beautiful, she's never put on a piece of clothing that didn't suit her and yet she still laughs and looks happy and likes to chat.'
Till date, Kate Middleton has shown she is as comfortable in the limelight on her own, just as much as she is in the company of her husband whom she so obviously adores. The marriage has not dimmed one bit their admiration, love and respect for each other. Meanwhile, even Prince William has taken on his role admirably not for one moment feeling jealous or side-lined at the enormous adulation showered on his wife. He is in-fact said to be proud of Duchess Kate.
Now the only expectation from the couple is for a royal heir. Speculation has been rife for some time now as to when the patter of small royal feet will be heard in the Buckingham palace corridors. However, Will and Kate seem to be in no hurry and have made it clear they will not be bound by any timetable. So till then royal admirers and fans will just have to make do with little tit-bits about the couple's cocker spaniel puppy, Lupo.
Here is wishing both Prince William and Duchess Catherine a very happy wedding anniversary and years of wedded bliss.
