It was a tragedy in the 65th annual Yacht Race of the Newport Ocean Sailing Association when the 37-foot Aegean, one of the 210 competing boats, met with an accident as understood from a report in foxnews of 29th April 2012.
Three of its crew members died in what appears to be an accident while the fourth is reported to be missing – the Coast Guards are trying to find out details of the accident.
The race was on a 125-mile stretch from Newport in California to Ensenada in New Mexico and the conditions for sailing were ideal with good visibility and moderate ocean waves of 6 to 8-feet.
The home port of the Aegean is Redondo Beach and the accident has presumably occurred near the Coronado Islands in Mexico because debris of the yacht has been seen in that area. The Coronado Islands consist of four tiny, uninhabited islands about 15 miles south of San Diego.
