Five friends were on a hunting mission in Southland, Otago, and one of them did not return. In the dark of the night, one of his friends mistook him for a deer and shot him dead.
This has been reported in nzherald.co.nz of 29th April 2012.
The sad and tragic incident took place in a remote farmland in Cattle Flat in Southland – the man was shot dead by a hunting rifle and death was instantaneous.
It appears the group had already killed one deer and was spotlighting for another one when the tragedy occurred.
This was, apparently, the second hunting death in the recent times – the earlier incident had been reported from south Wairarapa bush in April. That also was a careless handling of a firearm.
