Saudi Arabia recalls ambassador from Egypt, closes embassy and consulates

Protesters demanded the release of an Egyptian human rights activist held by Saudi authorities

Saudi Arabia has recalled its ambassador to Egypt "for consultation" and to temporarily close its embassy in Cairo and consulates in Alexandria and Suez, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

Saudi sources mentioned "attempts to invade these missions and threat their Saudi and Egyptian employees" "Hostile slogans were chanted and the immunity of diplomatic missions has been violated, contrary to all international rules," added the spokesman for Saudi Arabia's foreign ministry, AFP news reported.

According to Saudi Ministry of Interior statment, Gizawi was detained at Jeddah airport after some 20,000 anti-anxiety pills were purportedly found in his luggage and criticising the Saudi government.

Egyptians have been protesting against the Kingdom at the Saudi Arabia embassy in Cairo calling for the release of Ahmed Mohammed al-Gizawi's.

Egyptian demonstrators called for the expulsion of the Saudi ambassador in Cairo,Al-arabiya news reported.

On Monday, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry criticized Saudi officials for the activist's arrest and asked Riyadh to explain the move, Ahram Online reported.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabian officials denied reports that Egyptian human rights activist Ahmed Mohammed al-Gizawi's had been sentenced in absentia to 20 lashes and one year in prison for "defaming" the Saudi monarch during a recent visit to Saudi Arabia.
