China dissident Chen Guangcheng 'in US embassy'

China dissident Chen Guangcheng has escaped from house arrest and is in the US embassy in Beijing, activist Hu Jia has told the BBC.

The blind man Mr Chen had climbed over a high wall and was driven hundreds of kilometers to Beijing, Mr. Hu said.

Other unverified reports say that the Chinese dissident is under "US protection" while talks is in the process with Chinese officials.

Mr Chen has released a video addressed to Prime Minister Wen Jiabao since his escaped on Sunday, activist say. As reported, his brother and nephew have now been in the custody of police. Mr. Chen’s nephew Chen Kegui was taken away from his home by at least 30 police officers, the right group of Human Rights in China said.

The wellbeing of Mr. Chen and his family is now a concern of the UN human rights chief Navi Pillay who live in Dongshigu town, Shandong province.

The US state department has declined to comment on the claim that Mr Chen is in its embassy. In Beijing, the US embassy has also refused to comment.
