Ferrero has settled a lawsuit with the consumers of its brand, Nutella, which is a cocoa-hazelnut spread for bread. The spread was being considered as a healthy product by the consumers because of some deceiving advertisements of the brand. The company faced a lawsuit for misleading consumers by a lady in California. Athena Hohenberg, the complainant, believed the product to be nutritious and was very upset when she discovered that it is just like any other sweet.
The product is rich in sugar and fats and therefore not recommended for a healthy diet. Ms. Hohenberg assumed it to be a good addition to her kids’ breakfast after seeing the advertisements. She filed the lawsuit to get the compensation for the discomfort she had to face.
"Ms. Hohenberg was surprised and upset to learn that Nutella was in fact not a ‘healthy' ‘nutritious' food but instead a product with the nutritional properties of a candy bar, with very high levels of refined sugar and saturated fat. Had Ms. Hohenberg known the truth about Nutella's qualities, she would not have purchased it for her family," her compalint said as reported at CTV News.
As a result of the lawsuit, the brand and in turn the company is going to suffer in terms of money and reputation. The brand would be required to get rebranded to make it attractive for the consumers and develop trust in them. The labelling of the brand would have to be made clearer so that the consumers do not get misled again.
The company is responsible for providing accurate information about its products to the customers. The advertising campaign therefore needs to be designed with great care. In cases where the customers get confused about the product ingredients, they have the right to file a complaint against the producer. Ms. Hohenberg’s complaint must have cautioned many other consumers of the brand.
As awareness campaigns for the rising level of obesity have increased in the country, people are becoming diet conscious and concentrating on healthy food. Parents are therefore becoming more careful about their children’s diet to make it healthy and nutritious. They are focusing on the ingredients and nutritional facts of the products they purchase for daily consumption and trying to choose the best item available in the market.
