To mark the 26th anniversary of the biggest nuclear catastrophe in history, began the construction of a protective wall on the fourth reactor of the nuclear plant. Expect it to last at least 100 years.

According to Greenpeace, the current concrete cube that covers the ground is cracked up to one hundred meters and holes through which radioactive water out. Only now begin construction of the sarcophagus, which must ensure the safety of the reactor during the next century, will last until 2015.

"On behalf of Ukraine I express my deep appreciation to all donor countries to the Chernobyl foundation for your understanding and support for the current time to overcome the greatest catastrophe in the history of mankind, "said Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych during the act official start of construction.

Yanukovych, who traveled to that effect at the nuclear plant, stressed that the new sarcophagus to replace the bucket of concrete and steel built in 1986 "has no analogues in the world."

"Chernobyl is still a tragedy and is felt. So do not we stop worrying about the safety of the sarcophagus over the destroyed fourth reactor," said Ukrainian President.

According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the new arc-shaped coffin is “primary function contain the spread of radioactive substances.”

In September 2007, the French consortium Novarka signed a contract to build the second sarcophagus five years after winning the international competition organized by Kiev.

The new shelter that will cover the existing steel and concrete will be an arc with a length of 257 meters, a width of 150 and a height of 108 meters will be built next to the plant and then installed in the fourth reactor.

Chernobyl, in whose zone of 30 kilometer radiation levels is still several times higher than the norm, was closed in 2000, but still receives nuclear fuel, so it still represents a threat.
